A bear settles in a house basement in California: the owner awaits help.
According to ТСН: In California, Kenneth Johnson discovered that a large brown bear took up residence in his basement, squeezing through a small hole. He has been waiting for help from the Department of Fish and Wildlife over the holiday weekend.
Bear Discovery
The 63-year-old Johnson suspected something was wrong back in April when he noticed damaged bricks and a torn wooden frame blocking the access to the basement. He set up a camera in June, but only last week did he find out that the cause of the damage was a gigantic brown bear.
He was amazed that such a large animal could fit into such a tight space.
“I don't know how it got in there. It's probably some kind of acrobat,”he remarked.
Bear Behavior
Johnson also added that the bear is so big that
“its belly touches the ground.”The camera footage shows the bear, with a yellow tag in its ear, trying to escape from the basement. The camera recorded how the animal often goes out searching for food during the day but sleeps in the basement at night. On Friday, when Johnson was changing the batteries in the camera, the bear growled at him.
“I trembled like a fall leaf for half an hour,”he said.
Johnson contacted the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, which directed him to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. However, due to the holiday weekend, he was told that help would not arrive until Monday.
“It's inconvenient to go into the kitchen with the thought that there is a bear in there,”he said.
Interaction with Animals
The bear has not shown aggression, and Johnson believes the animal is not harmful. However, he maintains a distance, as even his cat is panic-stricken by the new neighbor. Johnson thinks that changes in the habitats of wild animals may be related to droughts and fires. He recalled a case when after one of the fires in Eaton, a bear moved under a house in Pasadena.
The owner does not yet know the bear's gender and is considering names like Ursa or Barry. The last time he saw the bear was early Saturday morning, and he noted that
“it has not disappeared since then.”
“I’m fine with it. But I want him to leave,”Johnson concluded.
Johnson's experience reflects the growing impact of wildlife on people's lives in urban areas. While the bear in California has not shown aggression, such cases are becoming more frequent. Recently, in Japan, a 69-year-old security guard was injured in a bear attack in a public restroom, indicating an increase in bear attacks nationwide, including in residential areas.
