Romania Demands Self-Destruct Capability for Ukrainian Drones After Incident Near Constanța.
Romania's Proposal on Maritime Unmanned Systems
According to Espreso.tv: Romanian Defense Minister Radu Mirițu has suggested that Ukraine program its naval drones to self-destruct if they lose control, specifically within 12 nautical miles of Romania's territorial waters. This call follows an incident on June 5 in the port of Constanța, where four unmanned vessels exploded near the harbor and the Black Sea.
In an interview on Romanian television channel TVR Info, Mirițu stated:
“If drones accidentally reach that line, the drone’s autonomous decision must be to self-detonate.” - Radu Mirițu
The measure aims to reduce risks to civilians in case the drones lose command. Ukraine’s Navy confirmed that one of its drones lost control due to enemy electronic warfare measures.
Incident Analysis and Bilateral Cooperation
Following the event, Romanian President Niculae Dan convened a meeting on June 6 to review the circumstances. Ukraine’s Navy reported that it had shared all necessary information with the Romanian Naval Forces to prevent civilian casualties. This situation highlights the growing need for safety protocols and cross-border collaboration in the face of modern military threats.
The incident and the defense minister’s proposal underscore escalating security concerns in the Black Sea region, where military operations can severely impact civilian populations. As drone technology is increasingly used for both defensive and offensive purposes, cooperation between Ukraine and Romania on security matters has become especially urgent. Discussions on new safety measures could help prevent similar occurrences in the future.
