The average salary of men in Ukraine is 26.6 percent higher than the average salary of women, according to data from the State Statistics Service of Ukraine published on Monday, September 4.

In the first half of 2017, the average monthly salary of a male employee in Ukraine was 7779 hryvnias, while the average monthly salary of a female employee was 6243 hryvnias. The highest salaries in Ukraine are recorded in the financial and insurance sectors, but in this area, the salary gap between men and women is even greater - men earn an average of 16,469 hryvnias, while women earn 10,846 hryvnias, which is approximately 50 percent less.

The lowest salary levels are in the temporary accommodation and food service sectors: for men, it is 5254 hryvnias, and for women, it is 4736 hryvnias per month. Overall, men earn more than women in all sectors of employment, except in the administrative and support services sector, where women’s salaries are slightly higher - 5480 hryvnias for women and 5440 hryvnias for men. The data is provided without accounting for the temporarily occupied territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol, as well as part of the area of the anti-terrorist operation.

Gender Pay Gap in the European Union

It should be noted that according to Eurostat data from March 2017, in all EU countries, men in managerial positions receive higher pay than women. The largest pay gap for managerial employees between men and women is in Hungary (33.7 percent), Italy (33.5), the Czech Republic (29.7), Slovakia (28.3), Poland (27.7), Austria (26.9), Germany (26.8), and Portugal (25.9).

The publication of state statistics in Ukraine confirmed the wage inequality between men and women in the country. On average, men earn 27% more than women, especially in the area of finance and insurance, where this difference is even greater. This situation is relevant not only in Ukraine but also in other countries, including the European Union.
