Rick Moranis Returns to the Big Screen: First Photo from the Set of the Sequel to Spaceballs.
Rick Moranis Returns to 'Spaceballs'
According to The Sun: Famous 90s actor Rick Moranis has become the star of a new behind-the-scenes photo from the continuation of the film 'Spaceballs,' preparing for his return to the big screen.
Rick, who is 72 years old, has not appeared in feature films since the release of Disney's 'Honey, I Shrunk Ourselves,' which hit video in 1997.
The Canadian actor returns after nearly three decades out of the spotlight to reprise the role of Dark Helmet in the new sequel to 'Spaceballs.'
The original film was released in 1987 and included many celebrities, including Mel Brooks, Daphne Zuniga, Bill Pullman, John Candy, and Joan Rivers.
Some of Rick's former colleagues will also return for the sequel, including Mel, Daphne, Bill, and George Wyner. New faces in the cast include Josh Gad and Keke Palmer.
All of them were captured in a new photo during the first official script reading, which went viral online. In the black-and-white shot, the group is sitting in a circle, and Rick is next to Josh Gad, who co-wrote the script along with Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy writers Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez.
Rick looked different than fans are used to seeing him - he was wearing pants, a knit top, a buttoned vest, and a baseball cap. However, he kept his signature round glasses.
The father of two interacted with his colleagues, and production has already begun, according to information from the press release.
The sequel to 'Spaceballs' is tentatively scheduled for release in theaters in 2027.
Details of the Sequel
Little is known about the film so far, as the press release joked: “the title is likely the title of the film, and plot details are described as information about what happens in the story.”
However, fans are eagerly anticipating the return of their favorite characters, including Rick, after a long absence from the screen.
An Important Return
In addition to 'Spaceballs,' Rick starred in many successful films of the 1980s and 1990s, such as 'Honey, I Shrunk the Kids' and its sequels, 'Ghostbusters,' and 'The Flintstones.'
In 1997, the actor decided to leave Hollywood to focus on raising his two children.
Rick became a single father after the death of his wife, Ann Belsky, from breast cancer in 1991.
Although Rick has disappeared from the big screens, he has not completely stepped away from acting. He voiced several animated projects, including 'Brother Bear' in 2003 and its sequel 'Brother Bear 2' in 2006.
Rick's voice was also heard in an episode of 'The Goldbergs' in 2018 and in the Disney+ documentary series 'Prop Culture' in 2020.
An Unfortunate Incident
Sadly, Rick's name resurfaced in the news in October 2020 when he was physically attacked while walking in New York.
Security cameras captured a man approaching the 'Parenthood' star and pushing him onto the sidewalk. The attacker then vanished, leaving Rick on the pavement.
Rick's representative released a statement assuring that the actor was fine despite injuries to his head, back, and thigh.
Rick Moranis's return in the sequel to 'Spaceballs' showcases not only his desire to return to the acting profession but also marks the importance of his role in film history. Fans are eagerly awaiting new adventures in the 'Spaceballs' universe, hoping that the new film will replicate the success of the original.
This project not only brings back iconic characters but is also directly tied to the continuation of leisure for generations that grew up with Rick Moranis's films, thus opening new opportunities for new fans.
