The Ministry of Energy explained the different durations of power outages: three key reasons

According to ТСН: The duration of power outages in different regions, and sometimes even in neighboring houses or entrances, depends on the specifics of infrastructure damage and the technical limitations of the network.

The Ministry of Energy reported that after enemy attacks, the energy system operates in difficult conditions, which does not always allow for a uniform distribution of electricity.

“Electricity generated in western Ukraine is often impossible to transfer to other regions due to damaged substations. The same situation applies to imported resources: they cannot be delivered to consumers where networks have critical destruction. Additionally, facilities have varying degrees of damage, so repairs in some areas take significantly longer than in others,” the Ministry of Energy noted.

Moreover, the ministry emphasized that one of the reasons for the “injustice” in outage schedules is related to the technical architecture of cities. Other factors affecting the duration of outages were also noted:

  • Degree of damage. Restoration of distribution networks in different areas requires different amounts of time — in some places repairs take longer.

  • Feeding schemes. Buildings or individual entrances may be connected to different transformer substations. Technically, it is impossible to change this scheme during a crisis.

  • Emergency factors. Emergency outages may be added to planned schedules if the network is overloaded and there is a threat of a large-scale accident.

The Ministry of Energy also reminded that the presence of electricity in nearby shops or offices does not always indicate unfairness, as businesses often use generators or powerful charging stations.

What to do if the power is only out in your house

If electricity has returned to neighboring houses but not to yours, the ministry advises taking the following steps:

  1. Check the distribution system operator's (oblenergo) website for information about local emergency outages.

  2. Contact the homeowners' association or maintainer if there is power in the building but absent only in your apartment — it could be a malfunction of the internal building network.

  3. Leave a request with the distribution network operator if the emergency has not been recorded in the databases.

“Under no circumstances intervene in the power feeding schemes on your own, as this may lead to phase overload and equipment failure. Trust specialists,” the ministry noted.

The Ministry of Energy urges Ukrainians to consume electricity sparingly during the hours when it is available and recommends turning on powerful appliances in turns to support the stability of the energy system.

The situation in the energy sector remains challenging. Due to the consequences of massive attacks on energy infrastructure in the capital and several districts of the Kyiv region, emergency outages have been implemented. Energy workers operate around the clock, but adverse weather conditions slow down the recovery pace.
