Tankers Transiting the Strait of Hormuz

According to Espreso.tv: Large energy-carrying vessels have begun moving through the Strait of Hormuz after a temporary agreement was reached between the United States and Iran. The first ships to enter the strait were the LNG carrier Mraikh and the tanker Ye Chi.

On June 18, 2023, the Mraikh, carrying a shipment of liquefied natural gas from Qatar, entered the strategic waterway. That same day, the Ye Chi also sailed into the strait to transport petroleum products. These developments followed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between U.S. leader Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, which took place on the night of June 18.

Impact on Global Energy Markets

This transit marks a notable improvement in U.S.-Iran relations, with potential consequences for the global energy market. The movement of tankers through the Strait of Hormuz—a critical chokepoint for oil and gas shipments—highlights the possibility of renewed trade ties between two countries that have experienced significant friction in recent years. Such shifts could affect energy prices and regional energy security.
