Low percentage of ballistic missile interception: expert explains why the Russian Federation chooses certain regions

According to ТСН: The low level of interception of ballistic missiles during Russian attacks on the night of January 13 is explained by the enemy's conscious choice of strategy to strike regions where there is no powerful defense system against Western anti-aircraft missile systems.

The military expert noted that the statistics on the interception of enemy missiles (28% of ballistic missiles) directly depend on the placement of air defense assets. Russian troops know well where Ukrainian defenses are strongest and where the weak points are.

“They were hitting not only Kyiv and the region but also other regions that are not covered by Patriot missile systems. That’s why the interception rate is so low,” explained Popovych.

Popovych also emphasized that the enemy uses those means of attack that are the hardest to intercept, especially when there are no special air defense systems for ballistic missiles. This has led to significant consequences for Ukraine's energy infrastructure.

What is the enemy’s main goal?

According to the military expert, such missile attacks do not affect combat operations on the front line, and their main goal is to harm the civilian population.

“This is an attempt to influence the civilian population. To deprive them of heat, water, electricity,” the expert noted.

According to him, Russia's strategy is to create unbearable living conditions to force Ukrainians to pressure their government.

“So that people feel these problems and go out to block the streets, demanding their government make concessions in the peace process and accept Russia's conditions. This is the enemy’s overall goal,” summarized Popovych.

The expert also stressed that this tactic of terror through bombing was used during World War II but proved ineffective.

Furthermore, Russia continues to adapt its strike drones to Ukrainian countermeasures. After a failed attempt to use the reactive “Geran-3,” which Ukrainian anti-aircraft drones successfully intercepted, the occupiers presented a new model — “Geran-5.”

According to military experts, this new model is characterized by high speed and range, can be launched from a carrier aircraft, and creates new challenges for air defense systems and mobile fire groups.

The missile attacks carried out by Russia indicate the current military strategy of this state, which seeks to pressure the civilian population of Ukraine. In a war situation, it is essential to be prepared for new challenges and adapt defense systems to reduce casualties and protect innocent civilians.
