Taxes in the UK could rise by £380: who will receive new bills.
According to The Sun: Angela Rayner's plans envisage an increase in the annual council tax bill by £380 to fund development in underprivileged areas. However, rural households can expect an increase from £376 to £380 over the next four years.
A county network conducted research showing that families living in category D properties in rural areas will pay £2,756 a year by 2029, compared to the current £2,380.
'Rayner plans to redistribute funding from government sources to underfunded local authorities through a new formula. This means that households in wealthier areas will pay more council tax to support services in poorer regions'
'The government argues that these changes are necessary to ensure adequate funding for district services. Consultation on the new funding formula was launched in June and closed last week with anticipated implementation from next year.'
Ministry of Housing expresses concern
A representative from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government distanced themselves from the analysis, arguing that the current system of local authority funding is outdated, leading to insufficient community services. They highlighted the need for reforms to improve public services, maintaining the referendum threshold regarding council tax increases.
A report from the Institute for Fiscal Studies pointed to potential financial shortfalls for councils due to the proposed changes requiring council tax increases. Inner London councils, such as Camden, Hammersmith, and Fulham, expect a significant impact due to reduced government funding.
Proposed changes in council tax collection
A consultation has been launched to explore options to allow households to spread their council tax payments over 12 months instead of 10. Plans also include modifying the process for recovering council tax debts and making changes to discount rates for individuals with severe mental illness.
The consultation continues to address issues such as challenges within the tax payment brackets, conditions for income-based discounts and assistance, and available discounts for specific groups such as pensioners and low-income families.
This December, council tax rates in the UK may rise, leading to a significant blow to rural areas and the distribution of finances between poor and wealthy districts.
