From 2025, the rules for issuing test strips for diabetics will change: what to do.
According to inkorr.com: Patients with type 1 diabetes can obtain test strips for glucometers for free or with a small co-payment through the e-Prescription as part of the state reimbursement program. This initiative started in October 2023, and already more than 26 thousand Ukrainians have taken advantage of it, receiving over 17 million test strips worth about 70 million hryvnias.
Changes from 2025
From the beginning of 2025, to obtain test strips under the program, patients must have a corresponding treatment plan and prescription from an endocrinologist in the electronic health care system (EHCS).
Patients who are receiving test strips for the first time need to consult their endocrinologist. The doctor will enter the diagnosis into the EHCS, create a treatment plan, and make the initial prescription for test strips. In the future, prescriptions can also be created by primary care physicians - family doctors, therapists, or pediatricians.
Technical update of the EHCS
In November 2025, there will be a technical update in the EHCS, during which the term 'e-Prescription for medical device' will be changed to 'e-Request'. These changes will not affect patients' access to test strips for individual glucometers.
Process of obtaining test strips
Obtaining test strips under the reimbursement program consists of several stages: consulting an endocrinologist, receiving an e-Request number from the EHCS, selecting test strips at the pharmacy, and redeeming the e-Request. Within this program, test strips can be obtained for free or at a small cost.
The introduction of the reimbursement program has become an important step in ensuring access to necessary medical supplies for Ukrainians with diabetes. The update of the electronic health care system will provide even greater convenience and efficiency in the process of obtaining test strips, which will positively impact the quality of life of patients.
