Electricity Price Increases for the Population are Planned

Ukraine plans a significant increase in electricity prices for the population. The cost for 1 kilowatt-hour could reach 9 Hryvnias by the end of 2025.

This was stated by energy specialist Oleg Popenko on the show by Yuri Romanenko.

According to the expert, the first increase is planned for June 1, 2025 – to 6 Hryvnias and 68 Kopecks per kilowatt-hour. 'In the near future, that is, by June 1, 2025, the price for electricity will be raised to 6 Hryvnias and 68 Kopecks, and will overall rise to 9 Hryvnias within 2-3 years,' Popenko noted.

The expert emphasized that such a price increase has no economic basis.

According to him, the production costs for electricity, including transport, do not exceed 4 Hryvnias and 30 Kopecks. 'Even taking into account the corruption that is significant in all energy companies, the current price for electricity for the population fully covers the costs of Ukrenergo, Oblenergo, and Energoatom,' the specialist stressed. Popenko also pointed out that electricity prices in Europe are lower than those that are to be set in Ukraine.

'In Norway, the price is 4.5 Hryvnias, in Hungary, Serbia, and Bosnia the rates are even lower. Only in Norway is the average salary not less than 4,000 Euros,' the expert emphasized. According to him, about 70% of the population of Ukraine consumes up to 100 kilowatt-hours of electricity, indicating 'energy poverty' – a term used in Europe to define the minimum amount of energy required for normal living.

We remind you that Ukraine has committed to the IMF to raise tariffs to market levels, even during military conflicts.

We have also reported that reduced electricity prices have been introduced in Ukraine: for those who can pay less.
