The new head of the Ukrainian mission to NATO, Alena Hetmanchuk, expressed the position that Ukraine would abandon its desire to join the Alliance only if NATO itself ceases to exist. She emphasized that NATO membership for Ukraine is not only about security and foreign policy orientation but also about sovereignty, the right to choose, and participation in the Euro-Atlantic system of coordinates.
'I am deeply convinced that the only reason Ukraine could potentially abandon its ambition to become a NATO member would be the absence of NATO itself. Or its internal or external destruction to the extent that the Alliance simply ceased to be attractive and interesting for Ukrainians. But I believe - this will not happen'
Hetmanchuk also added that possible changes in NATO could lead to greater attention to security in Europe, and Ukraine could be useful to the Alliance by contributing to it rather than just receiving from it. This is an important point in the context of further prospects for cooperation between Ukraine and NATO.
