Ukraine’s Foreign Exchange Market in May 2026

According to Novyny.live: Since May 2026, Ukraine has seen a rise in the value of U.S. dollar banknotes, accompanied by a depreciation of the hryvnia. During this period, the official hryvnia-to-dollar exchange rate fluctuated between 43.80 and 44.29 UAH per dollar. However, experts suggest that the currency market may stabilize in June, when the first tranche of financial aid from the European Union is expected to arrive. This assistance could provide much-needed support to Ukraine’s economy amid ongoing pressures.

The official hryvnia-to-euro exchange rate also showed instability in May 2026, ranging from 51.26 to 51.72 UAH per euro. Analyst Oleksiy Plotnikov notes that

“there are no particular reasons for the dollar to rise in value from a supply and demand perspective”
. Nevertheless, once EU funds are received, it would be practical to credit them to the budget at a more favorable exchange rate.

June Dollar Rate Forecasts

What will happen to the dollar exchange rate in June? According to Plotnikov,

“during June, the official hryvnia-to-dollar exchange rate will most likely not reach the psychological level of 45 UAH per dollar”
. This suggests a degree of stability in the currency exchange rate in the near term.

Additionally, Ukrainians should be aware that the National Bank of Ukraine is withdrawing from circulation banknotes in denominations of 20, 50, 100, 200, and 500 hryvnias issued between 2003 and 2006. This decision could be a significant step toward improving cash circulation and stabilizing the country’s financial system.

In summary, while the situation in Ukraine’s foreign exchange market remains tense, there is hope for stabilization thanks to international financial assistance. Ukrainians should prepare for possible shifts in exchange rates and adjust their financial strategies accordingly. The withdrawal of old banknotes from circulation also highlights the need to modernize the financial system, which could positively impact confidence in the hryvnia in the future.
