According to the inspection report, one technician noted that the cable should have been replaced 263 days ago.
The inspection procedures included questions like: “Is the lift operating at full capacity?” Technicians confirmed.
However, nine hours after the inspection, two tram cars derailed onto a pedestrian path and crashed into a building.
“This disaster left everyone astonished,” said Pedro Bogas, president of the Carris company.
He also noted that “cables are checked daily in blocks.”
Bogas explained that the overall service of the cars is conducted every four years, with the last service in 2022, and interim checks every two years.
Bogas confirmed that the lift has backup systems that allow it to stop its movement, but noted that “on a light railway over 100 years old, this cannot be guaranteed.”

It became known that the tram driver, Andre Marques, was found dead “at the control of the vehicle.”
“Our driver remained at the wheel until the last moments, and this deeply affects us,” he added.
Bogas also stated that the Elevador da Gloria will continue its operation.
“We plan to build a new lift with even greater safety,” he assured.
Portuguese authorities confirmed the nationalities of all the victims of the tragedy.
Among the dead were three British citizens: an 82-year-old man, a 44-year-old man, and a 36-year-old woman.

The law enforcement agencies confirmed that all 16 dead had different nationalities. Among them were five Portuguese, two South Koreans, one Swiss citizen, three British, two Canadians, one Ukrainian, one American, and one French woman.
British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer expressed deep condolences regarding the deaths of British citizens.
“My thoughts are with their families and those affected by this dreadful event,” he emphasized.
After the incident, it became known that a German man, who was thought to be dead, was found alive in a Lisbon hospital.
He is the father of a three-year-old boy who, after the accident, asked a police officer to hold him.
The situation in Lisbon has sparked discussions about public transport safety. The country's authorities have already announced their intention to raise safety standards on tram routes to prevent similar tragedies in the future. This issue is being discussed at all levels, and the public hopes for quick and effective solutions.Read also
