Royal Mail increases delivery tariffs: how it will affect purchases from eBay

According to The Sun: eBay service warns buyers about important changes that will come into effect in the coming days.

The cost of delivery through Royal Mail will significantly rise from next month for both buyers and sellers.

Buyers and sellers on eBay will see an increase in delivery costs starting next month

Royal Mail announced a price increase for individual customers and sellers starting October 6. These changes may also affect other online platforms that use Royal Mail delivery services.

On eBay, delivery is usually done through Evri or Royal Mail. Sellers can choose whether to pay for delivery themselves or pass that responsibility onto the buyer.

The online platform informed its customers that on the eBay labels prices will rise by the following amounts:

  • Small and medium parcels (Standard and Signed for, 2nd class) – up by 15 pence to 65 pence per unit
  • Small and medium parcels (Standard and Signed for, 1st class) – up by 25 pence to 75 pence per unit
  • Tracked 48 small and medium parcels – up by 10 pence to 50 pence per unit
  • Tracked 24 small and medium parcels – up by 16 pence to 60 pence per unit

Changes in pricing will also apply to parcels that require a signature, guaranteed express deliveries, and Parcelforce Worldwide Express services. This information will undoubtedly impact buyers who plan to find good deals on eBay ahead of Christmas.

The Sun contacted eBay for a comment. It is known that in spring, Royal Mail already increased prices for private customers and sellers. At that time, the cost of first-class small parcels weighing up to 2 kg rose from £4.79 to £4.99, while second-class prices jumped from £3.75 to £3.90.

During this time, the cost of first-class stamps rose by 5 pence to £1.70, while prices for second-class stamps increased by 2 pence to 87 pence. The cost of sending a first-class large letter weighing up to 100 g is now £3.15, up from £2.60.

Royal Mail regularly raises prices in recent years due to increasing delivery costs. Recently, the company has experimented with new delivery models to reduce costs, including delivering second-class letters only once a week, with no deliveries on Saturday. Previously, the postal service committed to delivering six days a week – from Monday to Saturday.

Changes mean that first-class mail will continue to be delivered six days a week, but consumers will notice a difference in the speed of delivery for second-class letters. Such innovations are already being tested in 37 of the 1,200 Royal Mail delivery offices.

Useful tips for selling on eBay

NEW TO eBay? Handmade goods sales director Emma Grant shares tips for optimizing your listings:

  1. Use keywords – eBay automatically filters listing titles by keywords, so it’s important to use terms that people are searching for – especially brand and product names.
  2. Select the right category for your product – This may sound obvious, but it’s important to always select the most specific category for sale.
  3. Pictures matter – Most users will not place bids on items they cannot see. To achieve the best results, photograph in natural light on a neutral background and be honest about scratches or damages to the item.
  4. Be as detailed as possible – Be honest about the condition of the product and definitely mention any wear and tear.
  5. Research sold items – eBay has a feature that allows you to search for the item you want to sell and then filter results by sold items. Here you can view the price at which the item was sold and gain insights into how others listed it.
  6. Sell on Sunday – Keep time in mind. The highest buyer activity is observed on Sunday evenings, so plan to end your listings around that time. Choose a seven-day auction to ensure maximum bids. The longer your item is listed, the more chances it has to be seen, so if it’s not urgent, go for seven days. December is the busiest month on eBay.
  7. Be realistic with prices – Try to search for similar items on eBay to ensure you are choosing the right price, and always ask yourself if you would pay that price for that item.
  8. Donate to charity – When listing your item, consider donating a portion of your proceeds to a charity of your choice – from 10% to 100% – you can donate the funds from your item directly through the platform.
