Former U.S. Envoy Warns of Emerging Threat: The Kremlin Is Preparing a Political War Against Ukraine.
Russia’s Potential Post-War Influence on Ukraine
According to Espreso.tv: Michael Carpenter, a former U.S. ambassador to the OSCE, has raised concerns about Russia’s ability to exert influence over Ukraine after the war ends. He argues that the Kremlin may turn to political warfare tactics to advance its objectives, rather than relying solely on military force. Drawing a parallel to Georgia—where Russia launched an invasion in 2008—Carpenter noted how Moscow gradually expanded its sway over Tbilisi’s leadership over time.
According to Carpenter,
'the Kremlin has learned from examples like Georgia that political warfare can be far more effective than military power in achieving regime-change goals.'This suggests that Russian authorities might attempt similar strategies in Ukraine once the current conflict subsides.
He also emphasized that
'much will now depend on the resilience of Ukraine’s political system.'Highlighting the importance of stability, Carpenter warned that 'once the war ends and elections are held on Ukrainian soil, a very dangerous moment will arrive.' These observations point to the significant challenges Ukraine may face ahead, underscoring the need to strengthen democratic institutions.
Strengthening Democratic Institutions Is Key
Carpenter’s remarks highlight the importance of preparing for various post-war scenarios in Ukraine. They suggest that ensuring political stability requires not only battlefield success but also bolstering democratic structures and social cohesion.
- Ukraine could become a target of political manipulation.
- Ukrainian leaders must be ready for new challenges stemming from Russian aggression.
