Electric cars lose up to 30% of range in winter: how to avoid problems.
The impact of cold on the operation of electric cars
According to inkorr.com: With the arrival of the first autumn cold, electric car owners may notice changes in the performance of their vehicles. While in summer the charge was enough for about 350 kilometers, in September and October this figure can drop to 250–300 kilometers. This is not just a rumor, but a confirmation of physical laws.
As noted by 'Khvylia', lithium-ion batteries at low temperatures lose the ability to deliver energy. At -5 degrees Celsius, they can lose up to a third of their potential. Although the display shows a full charge, the actual available energy will be significantly lower.
Challenges for electric cars in winter
The problem is exacerbated by the need to heat the cabin. In gasoline and diesel cars, heat is a by-product, whereas in electric cars, energy from the battery is used for heating. Heating the seats, steering wheel, or windows can significantly reduce the range. Car manufacturers recommend warming the car while charging so that energy consumption is lower during driving.
Another issue is the battery management system. In damp weather with sharp temperature changes, the electronics can fail. Drivers may at one moment see a range of 200 kilometers, and in a few minutes this figure may suddenly drop to 150. This is caused by incorrect sensor readings that struggle with unstable conditions.
Furthermore, in the autumn period, the battery heating system becomes vulnerable. A failure of the heat pump or even a small coolant leak can cause the battery to remain cold. In this state, it charges slowly, and fast charging becomes almost impossible.
Autumn risks also concern small components. Moisture and dirt in the charging connector can lead to corrosion of contacts, and the 12-volt battery powering the electronics often fails in autumn and winter, which can lead to malfunctions in the vehicle's operation.
Thus, with the onset of cold weather, electric cars require more attention from their owners. A full charge before departure, cleaning of connectors, and checking the heating system can help avoid problems and ensure safe trips despite all seasonal challenges.
As the winter season approaches, electric car owners need to be cautious and consider the impact of cold weather on their vehicles' performance. Knowledge and preparation for potential issues can significantly ease the operation of electric cars in harsh weather conditions, which, in turn, will make trips more comfortable and safe.
