UK’s New PM Andy Burnham Pledges Ukraine Support in First Call with Zelensky.
Andy Burnham Takes Office as British Prime Minister
According to UATV: Andy Burnham has officially become the United Kingdom’s new prime minister, vowing to back Ukraine and drive domestic change. The Labour Party leader emphasized that caring for people will be his top priority. In his inaugural address, he called for forging a renewed sense of national unity:
“Caring for people will be at the heart of everything I do. I will give it my all, and I ask you to join me. Let us build a new national feeling of unity, rooted in shared purpose and a positive outlook.”
Labour retains its parliamentary majority, giving Burnham a clear mandate to advance his agenda. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion, the new PM has been a steadfast supporter of Ukraine. During his first conversation with President Volodymyr Zelensky, he reaffirmed his unwavering commitment:
“Later today, I will make it absolutely clear to President Zelensky that, as you know, nothing has changed. I will back him one hundred percent.”
The UK has already provided Ukraine with roughly $15 billion in non-repayable aid. Of that total, over £11 billion has gone to military assistance, including:
- nearly £8 billion in direct military support;
- 16 advanced Gripen fighter jets, funded with €300 million.
These aircraft are scheduled for delivery in 2027. President Zelensky highlighted the significance of British aid, stating: “Over this period, UK assistance to Ukraine has exceeded £11 billion, with nearly £8 billion allocated specifically for military support.”
By placing social issues and national cohesion at the forefront, Burnham aims to restore public trust in government. His firm stance on Ukraine underscores a continuity in British foreign policy focused on international stability and security. The new prime minister appears determined to uphold this tradition, signaling both domestic reform and robust global engagement.
