Expert on wintering in Ukraine: key risk - attacks on thermal generation.
According to inkorr.com: Ukraine is starting a new heating season with sufficient reserves of gas, coal, and petroleum products. However, the main risk remains the possible attacks by Russia on thermal generation, as stated by the director of the Energy Research Center, Oleksandr Kharchenko.
Situation in the fuel sector
The expert noted that thanks to the decentralized supply system and access to European markets, the fuel sector in Ukraine is indeed protected. '
Ukraine has a unique system that is completely decentralized. We can trade on the wheel and provide the entire country with gasoline, diesel, and everything necessary,' - he emphasized.
Vulnerable regions
Oleksandr Kharchenko pointed out that the most vulnerable in terms of electricity supply are large cities, particularly Kyiv and Odesa. '
There is no worse situation in terms of possible power interruptions than in Odesa and Kyiv. These are two very deficit energy regions,' - he noted.
Threat from attacks
The expert believes that the biggest threat is associated with strikes on thermal generation in frontline cities. '
The only part of the energy system that worries me today is thermal generation in certain cities. There, barbarians can really decide to deprive cities of heat in the winter. And this is the biggest danger,' - Kharchenko emphasized.
Winter prospects
Despite these risks, he believes that the country has sufficient reserves and resources to get through the winter without large-scale blackouts. According to him, emergency crews are now working faster than at the beginning of the full-scale invasion, and international support has helped organize vital reserves.
However, the issue of stable winter passage remains open. The heating season may be at risk, and therefore '
Naftogaz' has sought help from international partners. As noted by the head of the company, Serhiy Koretsky, during a meeting with representatives of the IMF mission, Ukraine needs the support of international financial institutions to ensure energy resilience during this challenging period.
