EU prepares to abandon Russian energy sources: what the new sanctions package entails.
The EU plans to phase out Russian fossil fuels
According to inkorr.com: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the European Union is considering a swift abandonment of Russian energy sources as part of the new sanctions package. The import of Russian oil by sea has already been banned, accounting for over 90% of all oil supplies from Russia, and a price 'ceiling' has been introduced.
In addition to these measures, restrictions against Russia's 'shadow' fleet and third countries are planned, as well as an accelerated cessation of Russian coal imports. Negotiations are ongoing to completely stop imports of oil and gas from Russia by 2028 and to abandon short-term contracts.
Countries that rely on Russian energy sources, including Hungary and Slovakia, are opposing the rapid abandonment of Russian fuels, as this could lead to rising prices.
The European Union intends to reduce its dependence on Russian energy sources, which is an important step towards stabilizing the situation in the region.
This situation highlights the EU's aspirations for independence from Russian fuel supplies, opening a new era in the region's energy policy and underscoring the importance of diversifying energy sources to ensure energy security.
