The EU may ban Russian gas from 2027: what it means for Ukraine

According to inkorr.com: The Spanish gas company Enagas has announced its readiness to abandon Russian liquefied natural gas as early as 2027, if the European Union accelerates the imposition of sanctions. CEO Arturo Gonzalo told Reuters that the company's infrastructure allows for such a ban to be implemented a year earlier than the scheduled deadline of European institutions.

These words came against the backdrop of negotiations in Brussels regarding legislative initiatives to ban the import of Russian oil and gas by January 2028. It was noted that a separate sanctions package could impose a ban on Russian LNG as early as 2027 as part of a strategy aimed at reducing revenues for the Kremlin to finance the war.

'I understand that Europe has ambitions regarding sanctions against Russia. We are technically ready to operate without Russian gas'

Gonzalo also emphasized that gas network operators have already developed reliable systems for tracking the origin of LNG shipments. Enagas uses a logistics platform where carriers are required to indicate the origin of the gas unloaded in Spain, and the information is verified through shipping documents and customs control.

Replacing Russian gas with American gas

The CEO is confident that the LNG market has sufficient volume to replace Russian supplies. 'As soon as LNG from Russia stops coming, a significant part of it will be replaced by LNG from the USA,' Gonzalo stated.

Next week, EU countries plan to approve a decision to abandon Russian oil and gas by 2028, after which negotiations with the European Parliament on the final version of the law will begin. At the same time, discussions continue on a separate sanctions package regarding Russian LNG.

The Spanish operator Enagas is ready to completely abandon Russian gas in 2027 if the European Union accelerates the implementation of sanctions. The CEO emphasized the technical readiness for such changes and expressed the possibility of replacing Russian gas with American gas. The approval of the plan to abandon Russian oil and gas by 2028 will be the next important step in the process of independence from Russian supplies.
