European officials are concerned that they will have to financially support the recovery and security of Ukraine without participating in negotiations between the US and Russia regarding the country.
Many European officials told the Financial Times that they expect Donald Trump to demand that they pay for the recovery of Ukraine and station their troops there to support peace.
'Americans do not consider Europe important in major geopolitical issues related to the war. This will be a test of unity. Trump sees us as a cash cow. We are unclear about what role we will play at the negotiating table in exchange for this money,' said one senior EU official.
Six European countries, including Germany, France, and the UK, have stated that they are ready to support Ukraine and its independence in the context of Russian aggression.
European leaders and ministers hope to learn more about Trump's plans during talks with the US Vice President and the President's envoy to Ukraine at the Munich Security Conference.
EU diplomats are worried about difficulties in communicating with representatives of the Trump administration, including the President of the European Commission.
National governments are resorting to bilateral contacts to obtain information about the peace plan before sharing it with partners in the EU.
'EU institutions are still looking for the right person with direct access to Trump for dialogue,' said a western official.
A meeting between the US Vice President and the President of the European Commission yielded no details on upcoming negotiations regarding Ukraine. Diplomats believe that Trump's representative is more important for understanding the American president's position.
Previous US administrations actively engaged Brussels in dialogue to strengthen the transatlantic alliance. However, Trump and his team do not show much interest in this issue. For them, Europe is just a financial source, and even participation in meetings is not mandatory.
