EU Unveils €90 Billion Loan and Fresh Sanctions Package to Bolster Ukraine.
European Union Escalates Support for Ukraine
According to UATV: On June 8, during an informal defense ministers' meeting held in Nicosia, Cyprus, the European Union moved to strengthen its military, financial, and sanctions-based backing for Ukraine. Officials from member states discussed several critical measures aimed at sustaining Ukraine amid the ongoing war.
In 2023, the EU plans to extend a €90 billion loan to Ukraine—a major financial lifeline intended to stabilize the country's economy during this difficult period. Additionally, total military assistance to Ukraine could reach €70 billion, underscoring the bloc's serious commitment to enhancing Ukraine's defensive capabilities.
Sanctions Against Russia and New Funding Avenues
A central topic of discussion was the Western sanctions regime targeting Russia, which has already cost Moscow an estimated $1.2 to $1.5 trillion. This figure was highlighted by Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, who stated:
“The numbers speak for themselves.” – Kaja Kallas
She further proposed using funds designated for military aid to reimburse member states for their arms deliveries to Ukraine. The meeting also addressed the EU's 21st sanctions package, which could be finalized as early as this week. A key development was Hungary lifting its veto on €6.6 billion from the European Peace Facility—amounting to over €5 billion—unlocking new resources for military and humanitarian assistance to Ukraine.
Against the backdrop of the protracted conflict, the European Union continues to ramp up its support for Ukraine, taking coordinated action not only in financial aid but also in military assistance and sanctions against the aggressor. This EU backing remains a vital pillar of Ukraine's strategy to strengthen its defense capabilities and economic resilience. Given these commitments, further deepening of cooperation between Ukraine and the European Union is expected in the near future.
