Hungary Sidelined from EU Closed-Door Talks: Budapest’s Stance Under Scrutiny.
Statement from the EU Foreign Affairs Spokesperson
According to UATV: During a press briefing in Brussels on March 31, EU Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Anita Hipper emphasized that discussions among EU foreign ministers must remain confidential. Her remarks came amid talks between Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó and Russia’s Sergey Lavrov, which reportedly explored the possibility of lifting sanctions.
Hipper underscored the critical importance of unity on sanctions policy, stating:
“I will start with the principle that sanctions are adopted unanimously, meaning this is not about any single country as such” - Anita Hipper
She also referenced the principle of sincere cooperation, noting that EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas had previously spoken with Hungary’s foreign minister.
Sanctions Negotiations and Tensions
The European Union has excluded Hungary from sensitive negotiations, highlighting the strain within the bloc. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has repeatedly voiced concerns about potential deals that could undermine EU unity and foreign policy. Against this backdrop, the sanctions question remains a top priority for European leaders.
The situation underscores growing friction among EU member states, particularly as Hungary seeks to broker compromises with Russia. Maintaining cohesion in EU foreign policy is increasingly urgent, as internal divisions risk weakening the bloc’s global standing. Observers and analysts will closely monitor how the EU proceeds with sanctions and its broader engagement with Moscow.
