The European Commission will introduce a new customs fee on packages from Temu and Shein.
According to inkorr.com: The European Commission is exploring the possibility of introducing a new customs fee of 2 euros on packages worth up to 150 euros that are imported into the EU from other countries. This initiative is part of a comprehensive customs reform aimed at streamlining e-commerce and ensuring product safety.
According to a CEP Research study, 4.6 billion packages worth up to 150 euros are expected to arrive in the European Union in 2024, most of which will be supplied from China through well-known online stores such as Temu and Shein.
The purpose of the new fee
- Reducing the costs of customs services for processing a large number of low-cost goods.
- Monitoring the quality and safety of imported products.
- Creating fair conditions for European sellers in the market.
National measures
Several EU countries have already decided to take independent measures and not wait for the union-wide reform planned for 2028:
- Romania plans to introduce a fixed fee on packages from abroad.
- France has already included a customs fee of 2 euros in the draft budget for 2026.
- The Netherlands is considering introducing a fee of 2 euros on each product.
Experts believe that the new customs fee could significantly increase shipping costs for Chinese platforms, which, in turn, will force them to rethink their supply strategy by adjusting product prices or delivery routes.
Such reform could seriously impact the e-commerce market in the EU, forcing companies to find new ways to optimize costs. Consumers may also experience changes in pricing policies as imported goods become more expensive due to additional customs fees. It is important to consider how these changes will affect the competitiveness of European manufacturers and imported goods.
