EES from October 12: How the new EU biometric rules will affect Ukrainians

According to inkorr.com: On October 12, 2025, the European Union will introduce a new digital border control system called the Entry/Exit System (EES). This system will allow tracking the entries and exits of citizens from third countries, including Ukrainians visiting the EU for short periods.

According to data published by the Financial Times, the EES automatically collects information from passports, fingerprints, and facial images. This will help to monitor travelers' compliance with the rules regarding their stay in the European Union.

The European Commissioner for Home Affairs, Magnus Brunner, emphasized: 'We will know who, when, and where is entering the EU. This is the digital basis of our new approach to border management.'

Possible complications on launch day

The Financial Times warns of possible complications at airports and border crossings on launch day due to the expected large influx of passengers. Member states must install new equipment at checkpoints, airports, and train stations for the automatic verification of travelers' immigration status.

The project has been delayed multiple times due to technical difficulties. Ultimately, the EU decided to roll it out in phases, with full functionality of the EES planned for April 10, 2026.

Phased checks at specific points

The system will not cover individuals with residence permits or long-term visas. Initially, checks will only take place in specific locations. For example, in the Netherlands, checks will be operational in the ports of IJmuiden and Eemshaven from October 12, and at Schiphol Airport only from November 3. In Germany, the first biometric checks will begin at Düsseldorf Airport and later in Frankfurt, Munich, and seaports.

'The implementation of this large-scale IT system in 27 member states is a complex and demanding task, but we are ready for it,' Brunner emphasized.

New requirements for drivers

It should also be noted that drivers are required to obtain a new document for traveling abroad by car.

Thus, the European Union is introducing a new border control system that will automatically record the entries and exits of citizens from third countries, including Ukrainians. This will be an important step towards improving the control of the movement of persons and the terms of their stay in the EU.
