Push to Rethink EU Accession Criteria

According to Novyny.live: Marta Kos, the European Commissioner for Enlargement, is urging a revision of the European Union's accession rules in light of Ukraine's situation and emerging challenges. She has voiced support for accelerating Ukraine's integration into the EU and exploring new models of membership. Kos made her remarks ahead of a gathering of EU foreign ministers scheduled to take place in Cyprus.

Kos argued that the moment is ripe to fast-track EU enlargement, stating, 'If there is a right time to speed up expansion, that time is now.' She stressed the need for a serious debate on reforming the accession framework to better accommodate Ukraine's needs.

'What I support is exactly the discussion,' she added.

Backing Ukraine and Confronting New Hurdles

Additionally, Kos expressed confidence that Ukraine is 'too big to fail.' She emphasized that if the European Union 'gets everything right,' it can build 'a strong continent capable of standing up to adversaries who want to see us fail.' The European Commission has also announced plans to open the first negotiation cluster for Ukraine and Moldova's EU accession on June 16.

Kos underscored that the EU must revamp its entry system to address Ukraine's specific circumstances. These efforts aim to strengthen European integration and ensure regional stability. The upcoming meeting of EU foreign ministers in Cyprus represents a pivotal step in this direction, as the integration of Ukraine and Moldova grows increasingly urgent amid current challenges.

Ukraine's situation and its drive for European integration are taking on new significance against the backdrop of political and economic pressures facing the EU. Revising the accession rules could prove crucial for bolstering stability and security in the region, especially given ongoing geopolitical tensions. The Cyprus meeting may inject fresh momentum into advancing ties between the EU and neighboring countries like Ukraine and Moldova.
