EU Eliminates Tariffs on Armenian Fruit and Vegetables: €52 Million Export Boost.
Duty-Free Access for Armenia Under New EU Support Package
According to Espreso.tv: The European Commission has introduced a duty-free regime for Armenia covering fresh fruits, vegetables, plants, and beverages, alongside a €52 million support package aimed at expanding exports to Europe. This decision still requires approval from the European Parliament before it can take full effect.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen met with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Yerevan to discuss prospects for closer cooperation between Armenia and the European Union. The new initiative extends tariff-free treatment not only to fresh produce but also to plants, beverages, and alcoholic products. This move gives Armenian producers a significant opportunity to ramp up their exports to EU markets.
Financial Aid and European Integration Efforts
In addition, von der Leyen announced €200 million in grants for developing logistics infrastructure across the South Caucasus, a region that includes Armenia. This investment is expected to improve business conditions and trade connectivity in the area. Armenia, for its part, has enshrined its European integration course into law, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening ties with the European Union.
Notably, in the June parliamentary elections, Prime Minister Pashinyan's party secured 49.81% of the vote, reflecting public support for his pro-European agenda. The combined efforts of Armenia and the EU could significantly impact the country's economic development, opening up new opportunities for its agricultural sector.
This step by the European Commission underscores a clear intent to deepen economic links between Armenia and the EU, potentially becoming a key driver for the growth of the nation's farming industry.
The duty-free regime and financial backing are expected to enhance the competitiveness of Armenian goods in the European market while contributing to overall economic growth. Approval of these initiatives by the European Parliament will be a crucial milestone in bringing these plans to fruition.
