Ex-England star says there’s ‘no chance’ he would ever want to play under Ruben Amorim and slams Man Utd tactics.
According to The Sun: Danny Murphy has stated that he would not want to play under Ruben Amorim.
The player, who played nine matches for England, criticized the tactics of Manchester United's manager after the team's defeat to Grimsby in a penalty shootout in the second round of the League Cup.
GettyThis failure highlighted Amorim's winless start to the season in the Premier League, as the team finished in a record low 15th place last season and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham.
The team's results are due to Amorim's continued adherence to his favorite 3-4-3 tactics.
Former Liverpool player Murphy spoke out sharply against this system, saying he would not like to play in such a midfield.
“I think this squad is capable of success. I just believe that his system is the problem, I have said it from the beginning.”
The 48-year-old specialist added:
“I would not want to play in such a system. No way.”
Despite this, Murphy admitted that it's hard not to like Amorim for his charisma, but noted that all United's midfielders have deteriorated under his management.
“He’s warm and charismatic – it’s impossible not to love him. But from a football point of view, this system will not work.”
Murphy also stated that “none of Manchester United's midfielders have progressed under this system. They have all regressed.”
“Each of them has taken a real hit – the reason is that if you play with two in midfield in any system, you will be overloaded and look complicated.”
Amorim filled his team with midfielders in the match against Grimsby but created confusion for former Manchester United player Phil Jones by deploying Mason Mount in the left wing-back position instead of midfielder.
Jones commented on this for Sky Sports:
“When he changed and put Mason Mount in that position, they still remained with five in defense, but built the play in such a formation against Grimsby, who sat on the edge of the penalty area.”
His thoughts were supported by another expert Jordi McAnuff, stating:
“How many times has this free player, for example, been in the build-up process? He should be where an attacking player should enter the box.”
“It’s just crazy that he adheres so clearly to this formation in any condition.”
United will face Burnley in their next league game, and the pressure on Amorim is increasing as bookmakers have shortened the odds on his dismissal even before the first international break of the season.
