Fake Account of Ukraine’s New Military Chief Prompts General Staff to Deny Audit Rumors.
Disinformation Campaigns and Fake Accounts on the Rise
According to Espreso.tv: Dmytro Lykhoviy, spokesperson for the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, has warned about the spread of fraudulent accounts and false information targeting the country’s newly appointed commander-in-chief, Mykhailo Drapatyi. On July 26, a fake account on X (formerly Twitter) claimed that Drapatyi had launched a sweeping audit of military units—a statement that Lykhoviy flatly denied.
“No, the audit claim is a lie. Commander-in-Chief Drapatyi has not ordered anything of the sort.” — Dmytro Lykhoviy
The counterfeit account, which carried a blue verification badge, could easily mislead users. Lykhoviy emphasized that such fabricated profiles amplify disinformation, noting: “A new wave has begun: fake pages of a pseudo-Drapatyi are appearing on Threads. Both the page and its latest post are fraudulent.” These incidents underscore the need for vigilance as false narratives spread rapidly across social media.
The Danger of Misinformation in the Digital Age
Given the speed at which misinformation spreads online, users must carefully verify content before sharing it. Fake accounts can seriously distort public opinion and erode trust in official sources. The General Staff’s swift response demonstrates its commitment to combating disinformation and safeguarding Ukraine’s information space. This is the latest in a series of coordinated efforts to undermine confidence in Ukraine’s military leadership amid the ongoing war with Russia.
