FIFA implements dynamic pricing for the 2026 World Cup: how it will affect fans.
According to The Sun: Fans from England will have a tough time as FIFA has confirmed the introduction of controversial dynamic pricing for the upcoming summer World Cup.
Fans will have three opportunities to obtain tickets, starting with a lottery on September 10, which requires a Visa card to participate.
Fans from England risk not fitting into the ticket pricesGettyTicket prices start at £45 ($60) but can reach up to £5,000 ($6,730) for the final — this is four times more expensive than the most expensive ticket for the 2022 World Cup final.
Dynamic pricing for the first time at the World Cup
FIFA has also confirmed that it will introduce 'variable pricing' for all 104 matches for the first time, although the exact costs have not yet been finalized.
This could lead to an increase in prices for matches involving England and other teams following the draw on December 5 in Washington, which will set the tournament schedule.
“We will adjust prices according to the demand we observe, as well as considering ticket availability,” said a FIFA representative.
“While we are committed to the initial price, we will implement variable pricing from day one of this process.”
Members of official support clubs for the England team, who receive tickets through a fixed distribution, are required to pay the initial price in all four categories.
However, considering that thousands of additional fans are eager to support the 'Three Lions', they may face higher prices, which has already become common for major events in the USA.
Ticket purchasing process
Those who pass the first lottery will have the opportunity to purchase tickets in October.
A total of up to 40 tickets will be available – four per match for ten matches.
The second ticket sales window will open from October to December, and after the draw, fans will be able to participate in another lottery based on the 'first come, first served' principle.
The games will be divided into four categories, with Category 1 being the most expensive.
In summary, the introduction of dynamic pricing has raised concerns among fans who may face unpredictable costs. This innovation highlights the growing commercialization of sporting events, where demand often dictates the price rather than the actual cost of the ticket. It is clear that the lottery and subsequent ticket sales will require flexibility and speed from fans to avoid missing the chance to see their favorite team on the grand stage.
