FIFA Responds to Mexico's Security Concerns Ahead of 2026 World Cup.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino Addresses Security for the 2026 World Cup
According to Novyny.live: FIFA President Gianni Infantino has issued a statement on security preparations for the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted in Mexico, the United States, and Canada. His comments follow a surge of violence in Mexico triggered by the killing of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as 'El Mencho,' the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. In Guadalajara, a designated host city, the unrest has included attacks, car burnings, and road blockades.
In his statement, Infantino stressed that FIFA is closely monitoring the situation in Mexico.
"We are tracking the situation in the country and working on all aspects of security. The main goal is to create conditions for the tournament to proceed without any obstacles for fans and teams,"the FIFA president noted.
Security Assurances from Mexican Authorities
Despite the recent turmoil, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has guaranteed that the conditions for hosting the matches will be secured. FIFA continues to collaborate with federal and regional security structures to ensure the tournament's safe execution. No official decisions to relocate games have been made, but the situation remains under close observation.
While security in Mexico remains a serious concern amid rising violence, both FIFA and the Mexican government assert they are taking all possible measures to ensure safety during the World Cup. The successful hosting of a major global event often requires robust coordination between international bodies and local authorities, especially in challenging circumstances.
