Energy bills rise by 2%: How to get help up to £1700.
Rising Energy Prices
According to The Sun: In October, households will face an increase in energy costs of 2%, which will amount to approximately £35 per year. However, there are many ways to alleviate this burden.
According to new regulations from the Ofgem regulator, the average energy bill will be around £1,755 per year starting this autumn.
Of course, the increase in energy bills indicates the need for support for strapped households.GettyThe energy regulator sets a maximum amount that suppliers can charge average households, reviewing this limit every three months depending on wholesale energy prices.
The increase in the cap comes amid expanding support for vulnerable households, while wholesale electricity and gas prices remain volatile due to global political changes, notably US trade policies.
Checking Benefits - £475
Depending on the benefits you receive, you may be eligible for additional assistance to cover your bills. Make sure you are receiving everything you are entitled to.
For example, those who receive Pension Credit will automatically receive a Winter Fuel Payment of up to £300.
Another program, Warm Home Discount, helps needy households by providing a £150 rebate that is deducted from their bills.
This discount is paid to households that receive the following benefits:
- Housing benefit
- Employment and Support Allowance
- Jobseeker's Allowance
- Income Support
- Pension Credit and Universal Credit
Additionally, Cold Weather Payments amount to another £25 and are issued whenever the temperature drops during the week.
You usually qualify for this assistance if you receive certain benefits:
- Pension Credit
- Income Support
- Jobseeker's Allowance
- Employment and Support Allowance
- Universal Credit
Use the benefits calculator to check what funds you are entitled to, so you don't miss out on extra help with bills.
Energy Grants - £1,700
Millions of households can apply for free energy grants up to £1,700.
Families with gas and electricity debt can expect assistance.
The British Gas fund for individuals and families is open to customers with prepayment meters who have debt ranging from £50 to £1,700 - and you do not necessarily have to be a British Gas customer.
The company encourages eligible households to apply.
Please note there are other conditions. For example, your income must be less than £18,723, or someone in the household must be registered as disabled and receiving disability benefits.
Jessica Taplin, CEO of the British Gas Energy Trust, said: “Unlike customers who pay their bills by direct debit, those using prepayment often see their debts deducted immediately from any credit they add.”
Other energy companies, such as OVO, Boost, and Eon, also offer grants for customers experiencing difficulties.
Refer a Friend - £2,500
E.ON has revived its “Refer a Friend” program, offering £50 in vouchers for customers and their friends for a successful referral link.
This can mean up to £2,500 in vouchers for shopping at stores like Greggs, M&S, or Waitrose, depending on the number of people you refer to the energy supplier.
Both sides will receive their vouchers once the new customer pays their first bill.
Household Support Fund - £350
Families experiencing financial difficulties may be eligible for cash or vouchers through the Household Support Fund.
The fund amounts to a huge £742 million, which is being distributed among councils in England.
These local authorities are now distributing their share of the fund and setting their own eligibility criteria.
This means that what you are entitled to depends on where you live. For example, households with disabilities in Bromsgrove and Redditch may currently apply for support up to £350.
You generally qualify for assistance if you receive benefits or have a low income and can receive energy vouchers or cash to cover energy bills.
Switching Suppliers - £298
You can save a significant amount just by switching to the best tariff on the market.
Richard Neudegg, Director of Regulation at price comparison site Uswitch.com, states: “Consumers on a standard variable rate can avoid these expected increases and save on their bills by switching to a well-rated fixed deal right now.”
In choosing the best fixed energy offers, you should refer to price comparison sites like Uswitch.com. You will need to provide your postcode and details of your energy usage to receive a list of available deals.
You will be able to compare rates, contract lengths, and any additional features of the offers.
Time of Use Change - £120
You can get discounts on your bills by changing when you use electricity.
For example, British Gas’s Peak Save program offers customers electricity at half price during certain hours.
It offers eligible customers half-price electricity between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM every Sunday until September 8th.
You can register for this program on the British Gas website by entering your full name, email address, and customer number.
Please note that registration is only available to those with a smart meter.
What Help is Available for Paying Energy Bills?
There are many different ways to get help with your energy bills if you are experiencing financial difficulties.
If you find yourself in debt, the first step is to contact your supplier to see if they can offer a payment plan instead of moving you to a prepayment meter.
This means paying back the debt in installments over a period of time.
If you are offered a plan that you cannot meet, contact the supplier again to see if it's possible to arrange a different deal.
Many energy companies have programs for customers who are struggling to pay their bills.
However, eligibility criteria may vary by supplier, and the amounts you can receive depend on your financial circumstances.
For example, customers of British Gas or Scottish Gas who are having trouble paying their energy bills may receive grants up to £2,000.
British Gas also offers assistance through its British Gas Energy Trust and Individuals Family Fund.
You do not have to be a customer of British Gas to apply for the second fund.
EDF, E.ON, Octopus Energy, and Scottish Power also offer grants for customers facing difficulties.
Thousands of vulnerable households are missing out on extra help and protection by not signing up for the Priority Services Register (PSR).
This service supports vulnerable households, including the elderly and individuals with illnesses.
Benefits include advance notice of power outages, free gas safety checks, and additional support during difficulties.
Contact your energy supplier to find out if you can apply.
The text above is intended to clarify information about rising energy prices and potential routes for households to receive assistance. The situation regarding energy resources prices remains complex, so it is important to be aware of the benefits and support programs that can substantially alleviate financial burdens. Households have the opportunity to take advantage of various grants, discounts, and programs that will help keep energy accessible during these challenging times.
