Barcelona terminated contract with ex-Chelsea player: details of the unexpected decision.
According to The Sun: Barcelona quietly said goodbye to former Southampton star Oriol Romeu.
The ex-Chelsea and Southampton player terminated his contract with the club in the last days of the transfer window.
According to AS, Romeu's employment relations with the club ended on August 28, despite the 33-year-old player having a contract until June 30, 2026.
Both parties reportedly reached an 'economic agreement' regarding his early termination.
Interestingly, neither the club nor the player issued an official statement regarding this move.
Romeu received several offers from different clubs over the summer, including one from Girona, but failed to find a new club in the last days before the window closed.
However, transfer windows in Turkey and Saudi Arabia are still open for him.
The transfer window for the Super League closes only on September 12.
End of career at Barcelona
The window for Portuguese clubs closes on September 15, and for the Saudi Pro League - on September 23.
Romeu came through the 'Barcelona' academy and joined the first team in 2011.
