Luca Brecel withdrew from the match after two frames: WST is considering sanctions

According to The Sun: Luca Brecel may face serious consequences after crashing out of his first match of the snooker season, where he scored just seven points in two frames.

The former world champion was trailing 0-2 to Tony Akani in a qualifying match in Leicester, which provided a chance to qualify for the Grand Prix in Xi'an.

He shook hands with Tony Akani as he was not satisfied with his cue

The Thai athlete was already ahead 40-1 in the third frame when Brecel unexpectedly stood up from his seat and shook his hand.

After a brief conversation with Akani, who looked confused, Brecel shook hands with the referee and walked out of the match, losing 0-5.

This match, consisting of nine frames, was his first of the new season, but now he has missed the main draw of the October event in China.

Snooker leaders are disappointed with his actions, and, according to sources, the incident is under review.

There is a possibility that he may face a serious penalty for withdrawing from the match if he cannot provide any exculpatory reasons.

“I started the match with a fighting spirit. But I quickly realized that there was no feeling in this cue at all,” Brecel wrote in an Instagram post.

Brecel, who is currently ranked 41st in the world rankings, has a free spirit: he spent the summer season at home, cycling with his girlfriend and visiting great restaurants.

It seems his passion for snooker has dimmed, raising concerns about his future in the game, especially in light of the potential loss of the Tour Card.

In the 2025-26 season he has already withdrawn from the League Championship and Masters in Saudi Arabia for medical reasons, and also did not appear in the Wuhan Open qualifiers.

Ronnie O'Sullivan was fined over £20,000 when he shockingly withdrew from the UK Championship match against Stephen Hendry in 2006.

The Rocket, as he is often called, later apologized for his actions related to a difficult period in his life when he was experiencing depression and mental health issues.

Many people are discussing the need for support mechanisms for athletes who may feel pressure or psychological discomfort, especially in light of events that have occurred in the careers of other famous players.
