The UK launches Second Hand September: how to save on clothing and save the planet.
According to The Sun: Today our closets are overflowing with 1.6 billion pieces of unworn clothing.
So the best choice for the planet — and for your wallet — is to stop buying new things and swap your old items for those that others have left behind.
OxfamAs part of the Second Hand September campaign, Oxfam encourages people to look for great deals and find unique items that will help you stand out from the crowd.
Treasure Hunting
Visiting charity shops on your streets is a great way to find real treasures.
Abi Owen, Oxfam's merchandiser, notes:
“Charity shops are full of wonderful, unique finds, so it's worth keeping an open mind to see what might interest you.'
“As autumn begins, timeless pieces like cable knit sweaters and plaid shirts become ideal for shopping at thrift stores.”
Amazing Finds Online
If you can't make it to a charity shop, try finding items online.
Dive into Vinted or eBay, and also check out charity shops online; many of them have their own e-commerce platforms.
On the Oxfam online shop (onlineshop.oxfam.org.uk), you can narrow your search by price, size, or designer.
We found Ralph Lauren glasses for less than £9.99, a Tommy Hilfiger jumpsuit for £12.99, and a wedding dress for £30.
During the Second Hand September campaign, there are various offers available, including free shipping through Tuesday and a 10% discount for subscribing to Oxfam's newsletter.
Smart Purchases
Spend your money wisely by choosing second-hand items that you will wear often.
Jeans never go out of style, and you can find plenty in charity shops.
Abi asserts:
“Whether it's a pair of jeans or a classic jacket — they are perfect for creating a stylish look.”
“Plus, they get even better with wear.”
“Accessories are also great finds on the secondhand market. A nice belt or elegant serious jewelry can complete your look.”
Pay attention to details, like a tartan scarf, to enhance your outfit.
