Branches will continue to close in the coming weeks and months. In September alone, 26 NatWest branches and 13 Halifax branches will close.

Closures will also continue in October and November as banks try to adapt to customers moving to online and mobile banking.

Additionally, NatWest and Lloyds have already confirmed new closures, some of which are planned for 2026.

Since January 2015, banks and building societies have closed an astonishing 6443 branches, averaging 53 closures per month, according to consumer agency Which?

Richardson, deputy editor of Which?, noted that branch closures represent a 'seismic shift' in how Brits use banking services.

NatWest

NatWest is one of the major banks closing branches in the UK.

According to Metro data, a NatWest representative noted that over 80% of their customers use digital services, while more than 97% of retail accounts are opened online.

This year, 54 branches will close, and since 2015, the NatWest group, which also includes Royal Bank of Scotland and Ulster Bank, has already closed 1409 branches.

Wider Trends

As of December last year, 64% of branches that were operating at the beginning of 2015 have closed.

The peak of closures occurred in 2017, when 867 locations closed across the UK, exceeding 70 monthly closures, followed by 792 closures in 2018.

However, communities and activists are emphasizing that closures pose a serious issue for elderly individuals who do not possess digital abilities.

Research shows that 39% of individuals over 65 do not use online banking, putting them at significant risk of financial exclusion.

Forgotten Customers

Customers remain forgotten, writes Tara Evans, head of consumer affairs at The Sun.

With branch closures and the transition to online banking, customers may feel cut off from financial services.

In July, we already brought this issue up in the pages of Sun Money.

One such customer, David Elkins, 82, a former maintenance worker from Calne, Wiltshire. His HSBC branch is closed, and now he has to travel ten miles to the nearest branch.

He has been diagnosed with kidney issues and requires frequent dialysis treatments, making the journey difficult.

Bank hubs are emerging as a solution to fill the gaps left by widespread closures, but currently, there are not enough of them.

Plans include 146 such hubs, but only 60 are currently available.

One can utilize one of the 11,635 post office branches for basic banking tasks, but account opening or closing cannot be done there.
