Oleh Ivashchenko’s Uncommon Public Appearances

According to Novyny.live: The head of Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR), Oleh Ivashchenko, has addressed why he seldom appears in public, attributing it to the inherently secretive nature of intelligence work. He made these remarks during an event honoring fallen defenders. Ivashchenko stressed that intelligence operations are not a public domain, which directly limits his media presence.

Ivashchenko was appointed as HUR director on January 2, 2023, by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Prior to this role, he led the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant general in 2021, and in 2022 he received the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, third class.

Honoring the Memory of Fallen Defenders

On January 21, 2023, Ivashchenko visited the Zaporizhzhia front to assess the situation firsthand. During his speech, he stated:

“This is part of our job. Intelligence is not public work; it is not a public sphere of activity, which is why I rarely appear.” - Oleh Ivashchenko

He also highlighted the importance of remembering those who gave their lives:

“Today, it is right to say that we honor all our heroes who died in battle defending independence. Honor and glory to all those fighting for Ukraine today.” - Oleh Ivashchenko

The event where Ivashchenko spoke was dedicated to the memory of Hero of Ukraine, Major General Maksym Shapoval, and was held as part of the Ukrainian Hand-to-Hand Combat Championship. This gathering served as a powerful symbol of remembrance and respect for those who sacrificed their lives for the country’s sovereignty.

Ivashchenko’s remarks underscore the critical role of intelligence amid Ukraine’s ongoing war. His rare public statements not only highlight the secretive nature of intelligence work but also reflect a deep commitment to honoring fallen soldiers—a vital aspect of societal memory. The event, centered on Major General Shapoval, serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by Ukrainian troops defending the nation’s independence.
