Yatsenyuk Opposes Returning Polish Awards: What’s Behind the Controversy.
Arseniy Yatsenyuk Protests the Return of Decorations
According to Espreso.tv: Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk has voiced strong opposition to Ukrainian officials returning Polish state honors, following a decision by Polish President Karol Nawrocki to strip Volodymyr Zelenskyy of the Order of the White Eagle. Yatsenyuk stressed the need for ongoing dialogue between Ukraine and Poland, arguing that one 'categorically wrong decision' should not be corrected with another.
On June 19, 2023, Nawrocki revoked the prestigious award from Zelenskyy, who had received the Order of the White Eagle from President Andrzej Duda earlier that year. In response, Zelenskyy returned the medal on June 20, and Nawrocki’s office confirmed its receipt on June 22.
Political Reactions
Yatsenyuk stated:
'I am categorically against this 'starfall' of orders.' — Arseniy Yatsenyuk
He emphasized that 'we cannot build a future by living only in the past.' The politician also highlighted the need for constructive communication between nations, noting that 'if we want to be a member of the European Union, we must not send each other away, but talk.'
Commenting on Nawrocki’s actions, Zelenskyy suggested they were driven 'purely by electoral motives.' The statements from both Yatsenyuk and Zelenskyy underscore the importance of maintaining strong ties between Ukraine and Poland amid political tensions.
This episode highlights the fragility of Ukrainian-Polish relations, particularly when political decisions risk affecting bilateral cooperation. Yatsenyuk’s stance reflects a desire to preserve constructive dialogue, while Zelenskyy’s reaction points to the political nuances that could shape perceptions of the relationship. Given the current global challenges, it remains vital for both countries to find ways to collaborate and reach mutual understanding, despite their differences.
