The British Government has halted the Bath Rugby stadium construction plan: What next.
Plans for the new Bath Rugby stadium are under threat
According to The Sun: The government has sent a letter to Bath and North East Somerset Council requesting that they do not approve new plans for the Bath Rugby stadium until permission is obtained from the Secretary of State.
The club plans to transform its Recreation Ground into a new 18,000-seat stadium as the current structure mainly consists of temporary stands.
Action ImagesThe Premier League club believes this project will aid in the redevelopment of their historic venue, where they have played since 1894, while 'preserving the rich heritage of the city.'
However, locals are protesting against these plans, believing that the Recreation Ground should remain an open green space.
Filmmaker Ken Loach, who joined the protests, noted: “Bath Recreation Ground was a gift to the people of Bath in 1956 and should remain an open green space forever. And now we find that one wealthy club, owned by one very rich man, has the lease and is now planning to build a large stadium here.”
The planning committee of Bath and North East Somerset Council is scheduled to discuss this proposal on September 17.
However, the letter from the government, sent on August 26, urged not to approve these plans without specific permission.
The document states: “The Secretary of State directs your council not to grant permission for this application without specific authorization.”
It remains unclear how the resignation of Angela Rayner as Housing Minister may impact the situation. Rayner, who held the position at the time of writing the letter, has been replaced by Steve Reed.
Bath Rugby emphasized in their statement: “There are no objections from statutory consultees, including UNESCO, Historic England, Natural England, the Environment Agency, and others regarding the stadium application for Bath. The proposals aim to restore the club's historic home at The Rec to create a world-class structure that meets the needs of fans, the Bath community, and other users, while respecting the rich heritage of the city.”
This Saturday, Bath Rugby will face Exeter at the Recreation Ground.
