Grimsby defeats Manchester United using an unregistered player: league decision.
Grimsby knocks Manchester United out of the League Cup despite rule violation
According to The Sun: The historic exit of Manchester United from the League Cup occurred when the League Two team, Grimsby, fielded an unregistered player.
This victory may have been the biggest moment in the club's history, as they became the first fourth division team to eliminate the Red Devils from an English cup, winning after a penalty shootout in the second round.
Getty GettyAccording to Grimsby's statement, midfielder Clark Oduor was registered to play exactly one minute past the EFL deadline of 12:00 noon before the match.
This violation was not immediately detected by the club due to 'computer issues' they experienced.
The club later self-reported the error to the EFL and accepted the punishment imposed on them for the rule violation.
However, the club will not be excluded from the tournament.
The EFL imposed a fine of £20,000, of which £10,000 remains under conditional suspension until the end of the 2025/26 season for violating competition rules.
Oduor, 26, became the only Grimsby player to miss his penalty during the shootout, which ultimately ended with Bryan Mbeumo hitting the crossbar.
