Russian Athletes in International Sports

According to UATV: Ukraine's Main Directorate of Intelligence (GUR) has released information on 15 Russian athletes who are seeking to compete internationally despite their support for the war in Ukraine. These individuals are members of Russian national teams, active servicemen in the Rosgvardiya (National Guard), and representatives of the CSKA and 'Dinamo' sports clubs.

The International Olympic Committee has extended invitations for the 2026 Olympics to some of these athletes, including:

  • Alexander Sayutin
  • Daria Nepryaeva
  • Savely Korostelev

These competitors have also visited temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories, such as Crimea. Meanwhile, Andriy Kanchelskis holds the position of head coach for the Bryansk football club 'Dinamo', and Yuriy Borodavko, along with other skiers from the Russian national team, are active-duty Rosgvardiya personnel.

"Russia systematically exploits international sport as a 'soft power' tool to spread propaganda, justify unprovoked aggression, and legitimize occupation. Therefore, these 'athletes' have no place in world sport and must be barred from international competitions, even under a 'neutral' status." - Ukrainian Military Intelligence

This disclosure comes as the debate over Russian and Belarusian participation in global sports continues to intensify. The Ukrainian side emphasizes that sport cannot be separated from politics, especially during an ongoing war. This issue is likely to influence future decisions by international sports federations regarding Russian athletes and shape the global community's perception of the legitimacy of their inclusion.
