Kharkiv Metro Expansion Plans
According to Novyny.live: A major expansion of the Kharkiv Metro system is now funded, with €320 million allocated for the construction of new stations and an electric depot. This significant investment aims to enhance the city's public transport infrastructure, with a target completion date of 2026. This development is part of broader efforts to modernize urban transit in Ukraine's second-largest city.
A key component of the project is the extension of the Oleksiivska line. Construction will begin from the 'Metrobudivnykiv' station and will add the following new stations:
- Derzhavinska
- Odeska
- Kashtanova (an intermediate station)
Currently, the Kharkiv Metro operates 30 stations across its three lines: Kholodnohirsko-Zavodska, Saltivska, and Oleksiivska.
Project Implementation Timeline
The tender for the first phase of construction is scheduled to begin on February 2, 2023. The comprehensive project also includes building the new 'Oleksiivske' electric depot, which will have a capacity for 100 train cars, and purchasing new rolling stock. Additional consultancy services for procurement and project implementation support are planned to ensure the expansion is carried out efficiently.
This metro expansion represents a critical step in improving Kharkiv's transport network. It is expected to alleviate road congestion and increase public transport accessibility for residents. The investment is also projected to stimulate regional economic development by creating new jobs and improving the quality of life for the city's inhabitants. The project's completion by 2026 will mark a major milestone in the modernization of Kharkiv's urban transit system.
