Poundland to Close All Stores on Boxing Day: Details of the Decision

According to The Sun: The popular discount store chain Poundland has announced that all its locations will close on St. Stephen's Day to give staff the necessary rest.

Poundland will keep its stores closed on Christmas, St. Stephen's Day, and New Year's Day, expressing gratitude to colleagues.

This decision was also practiced by the chain last year to provide its employees with time to relax.

This year has been challenging for the business. Following the sale of the company to private equity firm Gordon Brothers in June, plans to invest £90 million in the company after its acquisition began.

However, last month the closure program, aimed at shutting down 57 stores by September 28, was completed.

Additional closures will continue in October and November.

This is part of plans to reduce the number of Poundland stores from approximately 800 to 650-700 locations.

The restructuring includes cutting 1,000 positions from a shared workforce of 14,700 employees and closing two warehouses, affecting 350 staff members.

In addition to granting holiday leave, Poundland will also give each employee a £25 voucher, which can be used in stores during December and January 2026.

Darren McDonald, Country Manager at UK Poundland, said: “It’s no secret that 2025 has been one of our toughest years, but the support and commitment of our colleagues have been incredible – and I’m pleased we can reaffirm our commitment to give them the time they deserve during the holidays.”

Closing stores on St. Stephen's Day is a common practice for retailers, although not all of them close their locations on this day.

For example, Marks and Spencer employees will not automatically receive the day off on St. Stephen's Day for the first time in five years.

Aldi has also confirmed that it will close all of its stores in the UK for three days, including Christmas, St. Stephen's Day, and New Year's Day.

It seems Home Bargains will also close its stores on these three days and will shut early at 5:00 PM on Christmas Eve.

To find out if your favorite retailer will close its stores on St. Stephen's Day, follow their updates on social media.

Many chains publish their operating schedules on X and Facebook.

You can also use the retailer's store locator tool to find the hours of the nearest store.

Usually, there will also be a phone number provided for further information.

Other Changes at Poundland

Now customers will not be able to use the Poundland website to purchase items.

Additionally, the Poundland perks loyalty program has been canceled.

Poundland Perks customers can use their vouchers until January 15, 2026.

The chain will also close its manufacturing and digital distribution center in Darton, South Yorkshire, this year.

The national distribution center in Bilston will close at the beginning of 2026.

Shop closures and reorganization will allow the company to return to basics, increasing the range of products offered for £1 in stores.

Poundland aims for 60% of food items to be sold at £1.

In the coming months, Poundland will expand its new price simplicity to its general merchandise and clothing range, offering fewer price points and more focused assortments.

This will help customers take better advantage of the offers.

Why are retailers closing on St. Stephen's Day?

Closing on St. Stephen's Day allows employees to rest after the busy Christmas period.

This can boost team morale and reduce burnout.

It also provides an opportunity to spend time with family and friends during the holidays.

For some businesses, the costs of opening on St. Stephen's Day may not be justified given the expected sales revenue, especially if customer traffic is low.

With the rise of online shopping, some retailers may focus on online sales and promotions rather than opening physical stores on St. Stephen's Day.

For some businesses, it may be a tradition to remain closed on this day.

From a practical perspective, the day after Christmas can be used for stock checking, restocking items, and preparing for post-Christmas sales.
