Getty3729 stores belonging to the TJX family will give employees 24 hours off to celebrate Thanksgiving with their families.
Among the stores closing are TJ Maxx, Marshalls, HomeGoods, Sierra, and Homesense, meaning shoppers will not have access to holiday deals.
The stores will reopen the day after Thanksgiving when shoppers can compete for the best prices on Black Friday.
HomeGoods is not the only store closing for the holiday.
“Like in previous years, Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Sierra, and Homesense will also be closed on Thursday, November 28, before reopening on Friday,” said a company representative.
“We consider ourselves an employee-friendly company.”
“We are happy to give our employees the opportunity to celebrate Thanksgiving with family and friends.”
Other retailers in the U.S. are also following a similar trend, giving their employees a day off to celebrate.
Hobby Lobby has also decided to close all 1000 of its stores on Thanksgiving and Christmas.
The stores will reopen the day after Thanksgiving with extended hours on Black Friday.
Store hours
Store doors will open from 8 AM to 9 PM, giving shoppers plenty of time to shop.
Regular hours will remain unchanged for the rest of the season.
Hobby Lobby operates Monday to Saturday from 9 AM to 8 PM.
The stores are traditionally closed on Sundays, which is a long-standing practice of the company.
On Christmas Eve, shoppers can expect standard hours.
The stores will operate from 9 AM to 8 PM, and the same applies to Boxing Day, giving people the chance to shop after Christmas.
Best Buy also announced the closure of all 1000 stores for 24 hours on Thanksgiving.
The electronics giant confirmed that it would close its doors nationwide on that day.
This move reflects a broader trend in retail, as more companies are closing their stores on Thanksgiving after years of chaos related to early Black Friday sales.
Over the decade, major chains like Walmart and Target opened on Thanksgiving night to kick off Black Friday sales earlier.
However, since 2020, most have reverted to a strategy of closure for the holiday.
Thus, retail networks seem to increasingly prioritize their employees' time off during holidays, shifting focus from sales to the festive spirit. This indicates a new approach to organizing work that could positively impact corporate culture and team relations. It remains to be seen how this trend will develop in the coming years.
