What is available under the program

The government-funded program is available to all residents of Medway, even those who are not currently receiving assistance.

If eligible, the fund can be used for food, essentials, school uniforms, as well as paying for energy and water.

Additionally, funds can be used to cover costs for energy and water services, and in certain cases, housing expenses.

The program operates within a fixed budget and will be active until the end of March 2026.

Emergency support may be provided in the form of supermarket vouchers, school uniform vouchers, energy cards, and papers for obtaining vouchers.

For school uniforms, £100 is provided for each school-aged child in custody.

A voucher worth £100 will also be provided for citizens eligible for assistance with water costs.

The same amount is available for petrol costs.

In the case of energy and housing expenses, decisions will be made individually.

Overall, individuals who meet the criteria can receive up to £225 to cover costs for food and household items.

  • Two-person household: £85
  • Three-person household: £115
  • Four-person household: £155
  • Five-person household: £190
  • Six or more person household: £225

What will not be provided

Medway Council has provided recommendations on which requests will not be satisfied.

This includes any applications deemed non-urgent.

People with sufficient income or significant savings will also not receive funding.

While financial support is available for school uniforms, other clothing will not be funded.

However, in certain cases, exceptions may be made, such as for those who are forced to leave their homes due to flooding, fire, or domestic violence.

Costs for phone or similar services are also not covered by the support fund.

The council noted that assistance with council tax will not be provided, but those facing difficulties should seek help through the discretionary support program or crisis support program.

Eligibility requirements and how to apply

To receive this support, you must meet the requirements of Medway Council.

This includes residing in the area and being 16 years of age or older.

Applicants must be in a crisis situation or have obvious financial difficulties and have less than £500 in their account.

They must not have access to other funds that may be used to cover the needs for which they are applying.

Applications can be submitted through the Medway Council website, providing contact details, name, address, date of birth, and national insurance number.

You should also clarify details of the household, including individuals you live with and recent monthly bank statements.

Once the application is processed, the council will contact the household to inform them of the outcome.

This comes after The Sun previously reported that the Household Support Fund (HSF) of £742 million has been extended again, with the latest round running until March 2026.

Funds are distributed among councils across England, who may pass money to residents in need of assistance.

It is also reported that households in need of help can apply for £500 of free financial support.

Considering that energy bills are projected to rise by £1,737 next month, the program aims to support the most vulnerable during the winter months.

In launching this, the charity Act on Energy in the West Midlands has offered a payment program designed to support families with children under 18 or young people up to 21 who are studying full-time.

Explanation of the Household Support Fund

Editor of Sun Savers Lana Clemens explains what you need to know about the Household Support Fund.

If you are facing difficulties paying energy, water, food, or other necessary bills, the Household Support Fund can be an important support.

This financial assistance is a little-known way to secure additional resources for families struggling with rising living costs.

Each council in England has been allocated a share of £421 million intended to help low-income households.

Each local authority decides how to provide support: some offer vouchers, while others provide direct cash payments.

Support can reach hundreds of pounds for individual families.

However, eligibility criteria for receiving help may vary between councils.

Assistance is often offered to households that are part of welfare programs or may qualify for support based on income level.

The main thing is to contact your local authority to find out what support is available.

Don't delay: the program has been extended until April 2025, but your council may distribute its Household Support Fund resources earlier.

Once the funds run out, your chance of receiving assistance may be complicated, so it's important to apply as soon as possible.
