Help for Families with Children
The program is organized by the charity Act on Energy in the West Midlands, aimed at assisting families struggling with bill payments.
This program supports families with children under 18 or young adults up to 21 who are studying full-time.
However, there are other conditions for those who wish to receive these funds. Funding is limited, so the program operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications will be accepted until the end of September.
Families can receive a one-time aid of £500, while individuals without children can receive £300.
The funds can be transferred directly to energy suppliers or provided as prepaid energy vouchers for those using key or card meters.
The program is available only to residents of the West Midlands, including Stratford-upon-Avon.
Applicants must meet certain income and vulnerability criteria, providing proof of their income and savings.
Criteria for Receiving Assistance
To receive a one-off payment, households must have an annual gross income not exceeding £31,000.
To verify income, documents may be either recent payslips for the last three months for those on benefits, or three bank statements for those not receiving any benefits.
Proof of vulnerability is also required, such as:
- Chronic illnesses, such as COPD
- Unmanageable debt
- Pregnancy or children under five years old
- Disability receiving DLA or PIP
- Eligibility for free school meals for children on a reduced basis
- Other vulnerabilities which may be considered at the discretion of Act on Energy
Additionally, there are savings limits for applying for energy assistance: zero savings for households and up to £6000 for homeowners receiving assistance with physical interventions.
The concept of 'vulnerability' is defined quite broadly according to the standards of Act on Energy.
Families unsure of their eligibility may contact the charity for clarification.
How to Apply
Applications are submitted online via the Act on Energy website, which also offers advice on the necessary documentation.
The Warwickshire Household Support Fund provides additional help to families facing extra hardships.
This assistance includes support for heating, energy costs, and repairs.
Eligible residents can apply for funding for the repair or replacement of broken boilers and heating systems if they have owned their home for at least 12 months and it is currently not on the market.
Similar conditions apply to households with shared ownership that are eligible for assistance.
Similar programs may be available in other regions of the UK through local household support funds. Therefore, residents are advised to pay attention to such opportunities.
If you do not live in Warwickshire, Stratford-upon-Avon, Rugby, Nuneaton and Bedworth, or North Warwickshire, there are still several councils offering grants for bill payments and essential living costs.
Help with Paying for Energy
If you are having trouble paying your energy bills, there are several ways to receive support.
For example, the Winter Fuel Payment program offers £300 to pensioners to cover heating costs during the cold months.
It is expected that around 75% of pensioners will receive this help this year, following the Labour Party's return to broader eligibility criteria announced last winter.
Families experiencing hardship can also receive funding to cover their energy bills through the Household Support Fund (HSF).
A share of £742 million from the fund has been allocated to each council in England, which can be distributed among needy residents.
The amount you can receive and how payments are issued depends on your council and specific circumstances.
The program is ongoing for several rounds, with the last round running from April 2025 to March 2026.
In the meantime, thousands of households will benefit from the £150 Warm Home Discount.
This discount is provided based on income and is assigned to households with low income or those receiving certain benefits such as Universal Credit.
If you have outstanding energy bill debts, you can also get help from your energy supplier.
British Gas has announced a £140 million support package for clients facing financial difficulties.
This includes free energy grants, individualized support for households and small businesses, as well as funding for advisory centers and charities.
The 'You Pay: We Pay' program has also been launched, allowing households to receive matching payments from British Gas for six months.
Additionally, the Octopus Energy fund of £30 million, Octo Assist, helps customers manage their energy bills.
This includes free electric blankets, winter fuel payments, and waiving the main charge.
How to Calculate Your Energy Bill?
Below we outline how you can calculate your energy bill.
To know how much you will pay on your bill, you need to know your gas and electricity tariff rates as well as the standing charge for each fuel type.
The tariff rate is usually indicated on the bill in £/kWh, and the standing charge is the daily rate that is paid 365 days a year, regardless of the gas or electricity usage.
Next, you need to note your annual energy costs from your previous bill.
Once you have this data, you can calculate the costs for gas and electricity separately.
Multiply your consumption in kWh by the tariff rate of the respective fuel type to get the costs of using it.
Next, multiply each standing charge by 365, and add that total to your overall consumption costs to get your annual expenses.
Divide that amount by 12, and you will know how much to expect to pay each month starting from April 1.
