According to The Sun: Floyd Mayweather once rejected the fight with Amir Khan due to a dispute over boxing boots.

Khan was eager to arrange a fight with the American star Mayweather and spent many of his best years trying.

The British boxer always claimed that the reason for the fight cancellation was that he rushed to announce the deal before Mayweather had a chance to confirm it. However, the dispute over the boots became yet another barrier to finalizing the deal.

Both boxers were then sponsored by Reebok, and Mayweather wanted to wear a unique design of boots made for Khan. When the Bolton boxer refused to let him use his customized boots, Mayweather promised NEVER to fight Khan.

Currently, Khan confirmed that the conflict over the boots indeed became the main reason for their animosity.

“Yes, one of the issues was that Floyd wanted to wear the boots that I wanted, and I denied him that,” Khan said.

“Of course, due to his ego, that’s one of the reasons I said: ‘I will never box with you. I will never give you a chance to fight me,’” he added.

Mayweather ended his career in 2017 after a big fight against UFC star Conor McGregor, where he won in ten rounds. However, he continues to appear in exhibition fights.

Khan, at the age of 38, ended his career in 2022 after a heavy defeat to his long-time rival Kell Brook.

Fight delays due to Mayweather's caution

The British star still believes that Mayweather deliberately avoided his fight. Khan noted: “Maybe he was smart. Floyd knew he didn’t want to fight me, as I could inflict more damage than he needed.”

“He preferred to fight someone who had slow hands and slow feet,” Khan emphasized.

“But ultimately, he is a businessman. And he has been very successful in boxing, making a lot of money as he intelligently chose his fights.”
