How cashback sites work
Cashback sites earn money by directing shoppers to retail websites.
Retailers pay cashback sites for referred traffic, part of which is returned to shoppers as a thank you.
The amount of cashback depends on your spending and the terms of the agreement between the site and the retailer.
Data manager Nicola Frappell earned £1,000 cashback, while retail manager Lakhan Chauhan received £5,000 using cashback sites.
The main cashback sites are TopCashback and Quidco.
Both services are free to register for and offer premium memberships that allow you to earn higher cashback amounts for a fee.
TopCashback Plus Account deducts £5 from your annual cashback earnings for increased cashback of 25%, while Quidco takes £1 from monthly cashback earnings via the premium account offering up to 10% cashback.
However, it is essential to use cashback sites only for items you planned to buy, not just because you will get money back.
You can compare prices using sites like Price Spy, Price Runner, and Trolley.
And don't forget about Google, where you can quickly find information thanks to product/shopping tabs.
How to save on purchases
SUN Savers editor Lana Clements shares tips on how to find products at discounted prices and save…
Register for loyalty programs of the brands you shop from regularly. Many offer discounts or special terms for members.
Sales are a great opportunity to find genuine bargains.
Retailers often run promotions at the end of the month or during holiday times, so pay attention to this.
Subscribe to newsletters to be the first to know about special offers and follow stores on social media.
When shopping online, always check for discount codes or coupons — sites like vouchercodes.co.uk and myvouchercodes.co.uk gather deals from retailers.
Apps can be helpful with scanners. For example, Trolley.co.uk has a scanner to compare prices on branded products.
You can also use the B&M scanner in the app to find discounts in stores before they are marked by staff.
And always check if you can receive cashback before payment — because that means you get part of your money back.
