The Healthy Start program assists expectant and new parents with covering food costs.

The NHS initiative offers financial support to those who are more than 10 weeks pregnant or have a child under four years old, reimbursing costs for milk, fruits, and vegetables.

Approximately 130,000 individuals eligible for the Healthy Start program have not yet taken advantage of it.

Participants in the program can receive up to £442 per year. We explain who can receive this assistance and how to apply for it.

What is the Healthy Start program?

The Healthy Start program is designed to help expectant and new parents purchase healthy food and milk.

Previously, participants received vouchers to exchange at supermarkets and grocery stores like Tesco, Iceland, and Aldi.

Now, prepaid cards are offered, which can be used at any store that accepts Mastercard.

This means you can use the Healthy Start card at:

  • supermarkets
  • local shops
  • grocery stores
  • pharmacies and medical supply stores
  • markets
  • dairy shops
  • butcher shops
  • service stations

The amount you receive on the card depends on your circumstances.

For pregnancy from the 10th week, you will receive £4.25 per week.

For babies from birth to one year, this amount is £8.50 per week.

For children aged one to four years, you will receive £4.25 per week.

You can purchase a variety of items with the card, including:

  • issues with liquid cow's milk
  • fresh, frozen, and canned fruits and vegetables
  • fresh, dried, and canned legumes
  • infant milk formula

You can also use your card to obtain vitamins for infants and children up to four years old.

Who is eligible for the program and how to apply?

The program is not open to all new parents or pregnant women.

To qualify, you must be receiving certain benefits, including:

  • Child Tax Credit (only if your family's annual income is £16,190 or less)
  • Universal Credit
  • Income-based jobseeker's allowance
  • Pension Credit (including child addition)
  • Universal Credit (only if your family's earnings are £408 or less per month)
  • Working Tax Credit that is paid within four weeks if your or your partner's working hours have reduced to less than 16 hours a week

You will also be eligible for Healthy Start if:

  • you are under 18 and pregnant, even if you are not receiving any benefits
  • you are receiving Income-based Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) and are more than 10 weeks pregnant
  • you, your partner, or your caregiver are receiving only Working Tax Credit after you have stated you work 16 hours or less a week

Applications can be submitted via email or phone: [email protected] or 0300 330 7010. An online form is also available.

To complete your application, you will need your name, address, date of birth, national insurance number, due date (if you are pregnant), and a letter confirming your benefits if you are over 18.

This news comes amid a significant rise in food prices, which reached its highest level in a year and a half.
