Why do your neighbors have electricity while you don't: an explanation from energy specialists about the schedules

According to ТСН: Social networks are actively discussing the situation where some people are left without electricity for 10 hours, while their neighbors have power. Energy specialists emphasize that the schedules for outages are formed not based on sympathy, but on physical and technical aspects. This was stated by the senior dispatcher of NEC "Ukrenergo", Vitaliy Tokar, in his interview.

The phenomenon of the 'neighboring house'

According to the specialist, an important role is played by the transformer substation to which your building is connected. If critical infrastructure facilities, such as hospitals or boiler houses, are supplied from this line, it is impossible to turn them off without disconnecting important institutions.

"Boiler houses, hospitals, etc. will not be turned off. Some consumers are connected to substations from which they are supplied,"
the dispatcher noted.

Who controls fairness

The State Energy Supervision is responsible for overseeing the fairness of electricity distribution. Inspectors are to identify residential buildings that receive electricity from critical infrastructure lines and try to switch them to regular lines, if technically possible. This agency monitors the activities of regional energy companies and raises questions about the uneven distribution of electricity among schedules.

Why entire regions suffer

Tokar explained why some areas receive more light while others receive less. The reason lies in the generation deficit and damage to trunk networks. Transferring electricity over long distances is often physically impossible. The expert drew an analogy:

"Try to connect a lawn mower with a cable, say, 200 m long: both the socket and the cable will catch fire."
Similarly, with the energy system: even if the current is available somewhere, it is impossible to deliver it to a region with a deficit due to destroyed lines.

Who creates the schedules

The dispatcher clarified that:

  • "Ukrenergo" determines the volume of the deficit, for example, it gives the order to disconnect two schedules.

Regional energy companies independently decide who specifically and when to disconnect, creating schedules for consumers.

Let's remind that Russian shelling of Ukraine's critical infrastructure has led to power outages in many regions. Experts are trying to predict whether Ukrainians will have electricity for Christmas and New Year.

Thus, the situation with electricity supply in Ukraine remains complex, considering the need to maintain the functioning of critical infrastructure facilities. Energy companies have to solve complex tasks to ensure fair distribution of resources among consumers. This issue requires careful consideration and taking into account all technical aspects that may affect people's daily lives.
